THE RAPE OF GANYMEDE
A thing of beauty and a joy to behold? How can something as violent as a rape be so ironically compared to true love?
Eros (AKA Cupid) was known for mischievous interventions in the affairs of gods and mortals to cause bonds of love to form, often illicitly. Ultimately, in the later satirical poems, Eros was depicted as an adult male who embodies sexual power. Obviously in this painting, Eros has been cajoled by Zeus to use his powers to get Ganymede to accept the lust of Zeus as a high form of love.
